If you’re worried about the environmental impact of commuting to London, The 2024 Guide to Sustainable Commuting does the hard work for you, by researching planet-friendly options for everything involved with going to the office. From recommending the most ethically produced work clothes and kit to the most sustainable (and hopefully independent) places to buy coffee, snacks and lunch close to your London office locations.
This month we’re trying not to wish the rain to appear but we thought it would be useful to look at the options for choosing sustainable wet weather commuting gear whether you are travelling by rail, bus or bike!
Eco conscious rainjacket
Bam Clothing (known for their sustainable cotton-alternative bamboo work out clothes) have just introduced rain jackets which are made from 98% recycled materials. They have also swapped out the standard waterproofing chemical (which usually contains PFCs, which are damaging to marine life) for Teflon ecolite which is PFC-free. The even better news is that the jackets are 100% recyclable. With Men’s and women’s styles available from £129.
Repairable rainwear for cyclists
Albion are a British company who specialise in cycling gear to be worn in all terrains and weather. Their rain jackets (starting from £210) are made from recycled materials and their water proofing treatments are fluorocarbon free. Whilst not a cheap option these jackets are made to last and the company offer a repair kit and free repair service where you have damaged clothing in crashes.
Trench coat with a conscience
Albaray is an all-female led sustainable clothing brand who aim to make long-lasting, thoughtfully made clothing (the opposite of fast fashion if you like). Their belted trenchcoat, £165, is made from 100% organic cotton and they offer a tailoring service to ensure that what is ordered is a perfect fit which the purchaser will keep for a long time. The brand uses carbon-neutral delivery and supports several female-benefitting charities.
The high street winter raincoat option
UK brand Seasalt (70 shops in the UK) offer the type of long, lined raincoat suited for the colder months of commuting, keeping you warm and dry. The women’s Janelle waterproof jacket, £175, is made from 100% recycles nylon and polyester and is designed to be long lasting. The men’s Stone Wave waterproof coat is made from 65% recycled polyester and 35% cotton with 100% recycled lining. The company has a serious approach to sustainability, aiming to improve each year and publishing a sustainability report annually.
British casual rainwear
Finisterre are a B Corp – and a The 2024 Guide to Sustainable Commuting favourite – who offer a full range of outdoor wear, all thoughtfully and sustainably produced, with a repair service offered to extend clothing life. Their men’s stormbird waterproof jacket, £250, is a their most technical waterproof jacket, designed for heavy weather, made form recycled materials and with planet-kind waterproofing. Sustainability is core to the brand and they publish an annual impact report.
