If you’re worried about the environmental impact of commuting to London, The 2024 Guide to Sustainable Commuting does the hard work for you of researching planet-friendly options when going to the office. From recommending the most ethically produced work clothes and kit to the most sustainable (and hopefully independent) places to buy coffee, snacks and lunch close to your London office locations.
This month we’re looking at the most sustainable work bags on the market. All styles are suitable for both men and women and are made from recycled materials. The other key thing to consider from a sustainability perspective is keeping your bag for a long time. So choose carefully!
Brief case
UK brand Matt & Nat offer cruelty free, vegan brief cases in a variety of styles and all are made from 100% recycled plastic bottles. We like the Belem, a modern classic brief case with handles and a shoulder strap, which comes in black and grey at £155.
Backpack
The Hackney Backpack from Kind Bag London is made from 100% recycled material (18 plastic bottles for the medium size)and is completely waterproof (also a key consideration for the British commuter!) They also come in three sizes and a large selection of colours. The medium is £65.
The Tote
Stubble and Co are a B Corp certified company, who specialise in creating travel bags for adventurers. All bags are made from 100% recycled materials. Their Tote Bag, £100, would stand up to the rigours of an every day London commute very well. It’s waterproof and well designed, with both laptop and water bottle pockets and a strap on the back to fit over a wheelie suitcase handle.
Messenger bag
Kovered offer a range of ethically and sustainably produced bags, designed to last you decades, made from sustainably sourced natural materials – waxed canvas, leather and brass. Their Mersey Messenger Bag, £79, has a more organic look than the recycled plastic options and – they say – will improve with age.
Overnight bag
Monos are the first luggage company to achieve climate neutral certification. So, if you need to stay in London over night, choosing one of their bags would be a good choice. Their Carry On, £260, is a hard wheelie case, designed and made with care, to last, with vegan leather trim details. It is of course also designed to be carry on size and fit overhead airline lockers too.
